Primary care pediatrics requires more than knowing which illnesses affect children.
Nurses must recognize normal growth, identify concerning changes, communicate with families, understand preventive care, observe developmental patterns, and know when a child's condition may require further evaluation.
The Practical Guide Book on Primary Care Pediatrics for Nurses provides a clear, organized introduction to the everyday knowledge and clinical reasoning used in pediatric primary care.
Designed with nurses and nursing students in mind, this guide connects pediatric fundamentals with practical situations encountered when caring for infants, children, and adolescents.
Inside, you'll explore:
• Pediatric history taking and health assessment
• Age-appropriate physical examination
• Growth and developmental milestones
• Health supervision and well-child visits
• Immunization and preventive-care concepts
• Nutrition across childhood and adolescence
• Screening and risk assessment
• Family-centered communication
• Common respiratory conditions
• Ear, nose, and throat concerns
• Gastrointestinal complaints
• Skin conditions
• Fever and infectious presentations
• Musculoskeletal concerns
• Neurologic symptoms
• Urinary and reproductive concerns
• Behavioral and mental health considerations
• Adolescent health
• Chronic pediatric conditions
• Medication-safety considerations
• Recognizing red flags and urgent concerns
• Patient and caregiver education
• Documentation and continuity of care
• Clinical reasoning through practical pediatric scenarios
The emphasis throughout the book is practical.
What findings are expected at this age?
Which questions should be asked?
What should the nurse observe?
Which symptoms may indicate a routine problem—and which deserve immediate attention?
How should information be explained to a worried parent or caregiver?
And how do growth, development, environment, family circumstances, and health history influence the clinical picture?
Rather than presenting pediatric care as isolated diagnoses, this guide encourages readers to think about the whole child.
Whether you're a nursing student, newly qualified nurse, pediatric nurse, primary-care nurse, community-health nurse, or clinician seeking a structured pediatric refresher, this book is designed to make pediatric primary care easier to understand and apply.
Assess the child.
Understand the development.
Recognize the concern.
Support the family.
Know when further care is needed.
