8vo (ca. 20,5x13 cm), neuere Halblederbände mit goldgeprägten Rückentiteln, XIV, 688 Seiten, 7 gefaltete Kupfertafeln; 736 Seiten, mit 11 gefaltete Kupfertafeln. Dekorative neuere Buchbinder-Halbledereinbände, mit großen Lederecken und aufmontierten Buntpapierbezügen. Innen durchgehend leichter gebräunt. Der französische Physiker und Mathematike Jean-Baptiste Biot (1774 - 1862) untersuchte im frühen 19. Jahrhundert den Zusammenhang zwischen elektrischem Strom und Magnetismus (Biot-Savart-Gesetz), sowie die Drehung polarisierten Lichtes beim Durchgang durch optisch aktive, chemische Lösungen (optische Aktivität). Am 24. August 1804 unternahm er zusammen mit Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac eine Fahrt mit dem Wasserstoffballon und erreichte dabei eine Höhe von 4.000 m. Bei dieser Gelegenheit untersuchten beide das Erdmagnetfeld und insbesondere seine Inklination. Seller Inventory # 20097
