Powered Upper Limb Prostheses deals with the concept, implementation and clinical application of utilizing inherent electrical signals within normally innervated residual muscles under voluntary control of an upper limb amputee, amplifying these signals by battery-powered electrical means to make a terminal device, the prosthetic hand, move to perform intended function. The reader is introduced to various facets of upper limb amputations and their clinical management in both children and adults. The authors from Canada, USA and Great Britain are well known practitioners, academics and researchers in the field. The book has over 130 illustrations and contains an extensive bibliography.

Review
From the reviews of the first edition:
"The editor has assembled a group of specialists to produce a book dealing with myoelectrically powered upper limb prostheses. ... Especially the clinical chapters will surely be of interest to the practising doctor and to ancillary professions. These are well written and well illustrated with photographs and drawings. ... this book is of interest for specialists and recommended to all – orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, engineers ... . For the general orthopaedic surgeon it has some interest and should be available in the library ... ." (H. De Boeck, Acta Orthopaedica Belgica, Vol. 70 (4), 2004)
"The book presents complete treatment of the various aspects and components needed for successful implementation of myoelectrically controlled upper limb prostheses. The book is primarily intended to serve as a foundation for students as well as a valuable resource for professionals ... . This book would be an excellent addition to the library of rehabilitation institutions and professionals being involved in the field of prosthetics. It represents a comprehensive, tutorial but also a very practical and up to date guide ... ." (Zlatko Matjacic, IFMBE News, Issue 66, 2004)
"This book deals with particular problems concerning the equipment following amputations of the upper limb by the ‘functional’ myoelectric prostheses. ... The chapters are very detailed and relate to the method of installation as well as the possibilities of rehabilitation, which will provide an optimal result. The book ends in the possibilities that will be available in the future. The book will make it possible for the orthopaedic surgeon to be familarised with techniques often distant from his daily concerns." (Alain G. Graftiaux, European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology, Vol. 15 (1), 2005)
