Add to basketNumber 39 of 55 copies privately hand-printed during 1936 and 1937 by the author's son, H[arold] G[iles] Dixey, Oxford; small 8vo, 120 x180mm; pp [viii], 41; attractively printed on thick laid paper, edges untrimmed, and sewn into grey thick paper yapp wrappers with a red cover design; wrappers a little creased or frayed at the edges and with a couple of small water splash marks; the upper right corner seems to have been lightly gnawed by a rodent, or perhaps a teething baby, resulting in some small loss to the covers and indentations to the first and last two or three leaves; internally very good, each poem printed with a red initial (the text otherwise in black) and with a monochrome line drawing or other decoration at the foot of nearly every page; hand printed coloured frontispiece. Necessarily scarce. . . . There's a holograph inscription on th front fly, 'To Miss Rogers with affectionate regards from us all Oxford 1937', the probability that the 'all' is the family of the late author. . . . F A Dixey was a distinguished entomologist and for a time president of the Royal Entomological Society of London, an active Christian and a long-time supporter of the Darwinian theory of evolution by natural selection. Aged 79 he died after being struck by a car while crossing the road. This privately produced collection of his poems was produced by his children to honour him.
