It’s normal for children to not understand that the way they talk to themselves in their head has a great impact on what they can achieve, how much confidence they have, how much stress they can take and also their self-image as a whole.
“Those who say they can and those who say they cannot, are both correct.” - Confucius
The National Science Foundation recently stated: “We have 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. 80% are negative and 95% are repetitive thoughts”.
I can and I can’t are both very extremely powerful phrases, depending on how they are used.
Self-talk is something we often overlook, even though it’s a constant in our minds, and one of the only things the entire human race shares. Yet we rarely give the time to teach our young ones about the importance of positive self-talk and more importantly, how to control it and flip negative thoughts into positive.
Our inner voice can either be kind, reassuring, or optimistic: “I can do this, I’ve got this, this might be hard right now but I love a challenge. I may not have won this time but I’ll figure it out and improve next time.”
But for a lot of children and even adults, our inner voice can be harsh, degrading, or pessimistic: “I can’t do this, I’m so stupid. Why did I even think I’d be good at this, I am never trying it again”. With the current social climate, it’s distressingly easy for children to adopt this as their default. And it’s no secret that the way we see ourselves and the world in our younger years, has a knock-on effect and if not addressed, often shapes the rest of our life.
The National Science Foundation: “If we repeat those negative thoughts, we think negative way more than we think positive thoughts.”
Self-talk has a huge impact on how we think and feel. Over time, engaging in more positive self-talk can help reduce stress, improve self-esteem, increase motivation, inspire productivity, and improve overall mental and physical health.
This is why it is so important that our young ones learn practical, proven ways to reduce our negative self-talk and harness our positive self-talk.
