Add to basketPOPULAR SCIENTIFIC RECREATIONS BY PROFESSOR A.M. LOW NO DATE DJ. Of late I have been listing books from a recent estate sale of a college professor who appreciated, as I do, vintage technology-oriented tomes, particularly handsome volumes. Here s one with a less serious vein but nevertheless attractive, namely: Popular Scientific Recreations, by Professor A.M. Low. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 8 inches, 256 pages) was published by Ward, Lock & Co., Limited of London and Melbourne, without a date which I can find. It is bound in forest green cloth boards with black titles on cover and spine. What makes it more special is that the dust jacket has somehow survived, albeit a bit battered but still attractive. The book is very well illustrated with 16 illustrations (typically b&w photos printed on glossy paper) and 87 diagrams (typically pen & ink drawings, incorporated into the text). This book was probably intended for teenagers, but I think it will make a great reference book for high school science teachers looking for fun experiments for their classrooms. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket, as mentioned however, has a good deal of wear, mostly along the edges but including chips out of the top & bottom of the spine. It is, nevertheless, still largely intact and a great candidate for a mylar sheath. The hard covers are dust dulled but generally clean with a big bump to the upper left-hand corner and some minor rubbing to the spine tips and corners as well. Inside, there is a brief, inked gift inscription on the front endpaper but these are the only marks I found. The interior pages and plates are clean and bright and there is no age-toning or foxing (except some very minor and incipient foxing on the rear endpaper). Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
