Publlished by George Allen & Unwin for the Navy Records Society, Aldershot, 1984, being volume 124 of the Society publications in this series; 8vo, 155 x 230mm; standard blue cloth titled gilt on the spine and with the roundel of the Society in gilt on the front cover; no dust wrapper called for; pp xv, 400 plus list of the publication of this series to date; frontispiece photograph of Pollent; several more technical appendixes on relevant matters such as Range Finding by Triangulation, Triangulation by Coincidence, Disc-ball-Roller Mechanism, and more; extremely slight fading of the spine but otherwise in near fine condition. . . . . . At that time the accuracy of large naval guns was extremely poor and Lord Kelvin proposed the development of such an analogue device to calculate and solve the various equations relevant to the required trajectory of fire, including matter such as the relative motion of the ships engaged and of the time to hit. Pollen also disagreed frequently with the official British approach to and publication of material about World War I. In particular he disagreed with Admiral Jellicoe, then Commander of the British Grand Fleet, Pollen taking the view that any successes in the Battle of Jutland were actually down to the approach of Admiral Beatty. Pollen worked for much of his life with the Linotype Company, duly becoming MD although at that point he had also become a Director of BSA [the Birmingham Small Arms Company].…
