Item description from seller

28 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Kleberest und Etikettreste, ansonsten tadelloser Zustand / Glue residue and label remnants, otherwise impeccable condition - ATHENS GREATNESS as a thalassocracy is traced to its myth of Prince Theseus, the young hero who saves the youth of Athens from years of miserable foreign entrapment and death at the hands of a monster. The monster broods in a wealthy kingdom across the Aegean Sea, ruled by King Minos from his palace on Crete. Subject states, Athens included, owe him periodic tribute in the form of youths and maidens who are introduced into the fabled labyrinth, where they encounter the fatal half-human, half-bull creature called the Minotaur. When the time comes to send another group of victims to Crete, Theseus volunteers to go, assuring his father King Aegeus that he will put an end to Minos tyranny and return home safely. With the help of Minos daughter Ariadne, the bold young leader succeeds in killing the monster, overthrows Minos, burns the palace, and sails for Athens with the princess. Meanwhile, Aegeus looks for his sons safe return, to be signaled by a white sail in place of the black sail of his departure. But Theseus fails to change the sail, and in despair his father leaps from a cliff into the sea, leaving the throne of Athens to Theseus. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
