FOURTH EDITION. 231 pages + one page at rear of Valuable Works of Reference + 8 page catalogue at rear (Important works published by Griffin, Bohn & Company. Publisher's original dark-brown embossed cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and brown-coated end-papers. Short hairline splits to top of spine (0.25 - 1cm in depth) else quite well preserved. Almost certainly Arthur Duncombe's own copy as it bears his name (A.Duncombe/ Univ: Coll: Oxford). Arthur Duncombe (1806-1889) was a British Naval Officer who rose to the rank of Admiral and went onto become a Conservative politician. He served in the short-lived 1852 Conservative administration of the Earl of Derby as a Fourth Naval Lord. The Encyclopędia Metropolitana was an encyclopaedic work published in London, from 1817 to 1845, in all it came to 30 volumes. Nassau William Senior (1790 - 1864), was an English lawyer known as an economist. He was also a government adviser over several decades in the areas of economic and social policy, on which he wrote extensively. A very nice copy of an uncommon book.
