Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate fading and rubbing, fading to gilt spinal lettering, and chips and bumps at corners and head and tail of spine. A Good copy. A collection of speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas from the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates that took place from August-October 1858 in Illinois as well as separate speeches given by Lincoln and Douglas before the debates and correspondence between the two candidates. At the time of the debates, Douglas, a Democrat, was the incumbent United States Senator for Illinois. Lincoln, a Republican, was trying to take Douglas's seat in the U.S. Senate. Until 1913, U.S. Senators were elected by their state legislatures, so both Lincoln and Douglas were vying to win the votes of both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. The debates were structured so one candidate would give an opening speech which was then following by his opponent's reply and then a rejoinder from the opening candidate. The main focus of the debates was the subject of slavery. The following are the speeches contained herein: Lincoln's speeches in Springfield (June 16, 1858; erroneously labeled as June 17 in the book), Chicago (July 10, 1858), Springfield (July 17, 1858), Columbus (September 1859), and Cincinnati (September 1859); Douglas's speeches in Chicago (July 9, 1858), Bloomington (July 16, 1858), and Springfield (July 17, 1858); correspondence between Lincoln and Douglas in which they made arrangements for the debates; and the seven Lincoln-Douglas debates in Ottawa (August 21, 1858), Freeport (August 27, 1858); Jonesburo (September 15, 1858), Charleston (September 18, 1858), Galesburgh (October 7, 1858), Quincy (October 13, 1858), and Alton (October 15, 1858). Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition, fourth issue, as noted by Monaghan---the "Nomination Issue"---released March 20th, 1860 and the first copy to come to the attention of Stephen Douglas. The warm brown cloth over cardboard covers is impressed with a design consisting of a star in a circle with ornamental devices in the corners and three parallel lines at the edge; it is a little rubbed and faded, with a very small tear at the middle of the rear joint. The spine is chipped at the top; gilt lettering is dulled but still perceptible. Inside, there is a bold signature---"Jos. C. Hoagland / June 1st. 1860." There is an ink splotch on part of the "Jos" which has seeped through to the title page, not affecting the text. [Visible in one of the five images.] All of the pages are quite bright, with almost no foxing or spotting, except for a few small ink spots in the rear; four corner tips previously turned down, are now straight. Collation: 2 flyleaves, both being pasted to cover as end papers; leaf of title, on verso of which appears copyright notation and 'card' with line; leaf of contents, verso blank; text [l]-268; 2 flyleaves at rear. No mention of how many copies already sold; no ads and no prefatory correspondence. The second signature begins with page 13. [Please see multiple images of the actual book.] As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID-19, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays. Seller Inventory # 002182
