- Political Theory and History
Of Jesse D. Bright's early life little is known except that he was a boyhood friend of N orvin Green, afterward president of the Western Union Telegraph Company, and that he spent most of his time roving about the new and thriving city of Madison. It is not altogether improbable that his father still held the property he had acquired in Kentucky, and that the family frequently visited there. At any rate Bright had not been a grown man many years before he went to Gallatin County, Kentucky, to bring back Mary E. Turpin as his wife. It was his lifelong friend, Green, who operated the ferry when Bright crossed the Ohio to claim his wife.4 The Bright family was not long in establishing itself as a prosperous and respected group in Madison, and the men soon took their places as leaders in the life of the community.
Jesse D. Bright was fortunate in spending his young man hood in what was then the chief city in Indiana. Madison was the seat of power, wealth, and learning in Indiana during the thirties. The Madison bar was the most brilliant in the state. And Bright, as a young lawyer, was brought into intimate con tact with such men as Joseph G. Marshall, Jeremiah Sullivan.
