About the Author
A biography, I'm told, is more than a simple recounting of a person's achievements and milestones; it is, at its heart, the weaving together of moments that define a life. In my biography, you can embark on a journey through my life, experiencing brief accounts of my challenges, triumphs, and quiet reflections that make me uniquely the Author.
Early Years
I was told I am THE Native New Yorker. I was delivered in a Taxi cab by the driver. It now seems that all my life, I have had a sense of urgency to get things done. I lived in Harlem but eventually grew up in the Bronx. I'm sure I once rode the #6 train with a famous female singer. At the age of sixteen, I started writing short stories to pass the time. I never thought to publish them. They just seemed like stories that I had to get out of my system. My mother once told me I would be an Author someday. But I had dreams of dancing on a stage or singing in a play. My Parents went through the challenges of raising me with so many aspirations of who I wanted to be. They found a way to put me in singing classes, dancing classes, and even acting classes. I suspect it was just to keep me away from boys.
Personal Life and Passions
I eventually became a preacher's daughter who sang in the church choir and pretended to be Oprah. My acting pursuits led me to TV show pilots and sound bites for commercials like Tuna or Coca-Cola. I did some extra work, and then I realized I would never be famous. I did not like the cattle calls for my type at auditions and being told…You're just not ethnic enough because I refused to curse. So, I turned to writing more stories and designing my clothes. I even sewed a little and made a shirt that fit. By the time I graduated from High School, all the children in my class had signed my yearbook, wishing me a future as a fashion designer. I quickly gave up that idea when I went to college on my parents' dime, with an insistence on Business skills and accounting. I hated math all through high school. But Mommy and Daddy were paying. And still, I wrote short stories of perceived punishments and injustice. When I stepped into the world on my own, I worked at a television station and rubbed elbows with celebrities. I even hung out with Nancy Reagan in a penthouse, Queen Latifah, and the B-52's in a recording studio. The glamorous life did not seem like me. So, I kept my head down, worked hard, and tried to make a living. I have a sibling, but he went off to serve his country in the Army. This was after he tortured me with pet snakes and rats. I wrote about that too.
Challenges and Reflections
When I accidentally became an Adult, I became the Teflon version of me fighting Breast Cancer and Ninjas. Yes, I almost got mugged one time, but I was studying Ninjutsu, and some Ninjas came to my rescue from a bar closing near a dojo class. I have tried other professions over the years to see if I could become a millionaire through hard work. But it took getting Breast Cancer again 21 years later to force me to ask Who am I, and what gift did god give me in Catholic School. At this point, I had no children and no husband. But I had my imagination and a desire to get things done. So, I wrote and wrote. After the death of my Mother, father, and my sister, whom I did not know I had till I was sixteen, I asked God, What do you want me to do. What was my blessing or purpose in life? I sat down and wrote.
Legacy and Impact
One day, I may write my memoir, but having survived life up until now, I feel it's not the right time. Who cares if I beat on a limo window to get a glance at Michael Jackson? Or was kicked out of a compact disc convention for throwing CDs in a fight while visiting Birmingham, England. These will be the essence of a life well lived. Today I write, tomorrow I publish.
