Poisson, Simon Denis (1781-1840). (Two-part paper.) Each is offered in a full volume of the CR, paper #1 with the Poisson on pp 660-667 in the volume of 975pp, and paper #2 on pp 281-291 in the volume of 975pp (again!). Both volumes are bound in matching cloth (ca. Early 20th c), with some small wear around the edges; both have loose hinges, and a few ex-library marks here and there, including a pasted paper call number label at spine bottom. Both volumes are solid GOOD condition. ".'Recherches sur le mouvement des projectiles dans l’air' (1839, [this title published in full form as a 250pp book in this year]) was far better known in its day. It is the first work to deal with the subject by taking into account the rotation of the earth and the complementary acceleration resulting from the motion of the system of reference. A decade after its publication it inspired Foucault’s famous experiment demonstrating the earth’s rotation. Poisson, who had supervised Coriolis’ [Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis (1792–1843)] doctoral research, recognized the importance of his invention of a term to correct for the deviations from the law of motion that arise in a rotating reference system. Unfortunately, Poisson did not consider himself obliged to cite the name of the actual inventor of the term. The very multiplicity of Poisson’s undertakings might be considered a reason for his failure to enjoy the good fortune of which Cournot spoke. He constantly exploited the ideas of other scientists, often in an unscrupulous manner. Still, he was frequently the first to show their full significance, and he did much to disseminate them. In the last analysis, however, what was the scientific value of his own contribution? It is tempting to reply that he merely displayed a singular aptitude for the operations of mathematical analysis"--"Poisson, Siméon-Denis." Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography online, vol. 15, Charles Scribner's Sons, 2008, pp. 480-490. [++] "In physics, the Coriolis force is an inertial or fictitious force that acts on objects that are in motion within a frame of reference that rotates with respect to an inertial frame. In a reference frame with clockwise rotation, the force acts to the left of the motion of the object. In one with anticlockwise (or counterclockwise) rotation, the force acts to the right. Deflection of an object due to the Coriolis force is called the Coriolis effect. Though recognized previously by others, the mathematical expression for the Coriolis force appeared in an 1835 paper by French scientist Gaspard-Gustave de Coriolis, in connection with the theory of water wheels."--Wikipedia [++] "Coriolis discussed motion in a rotating frame of reference in 1835. Siméon-Denis Poisson dealt with the deflection of projectiles in 1838. Earlier, in 1735, George Hadley noted the possible effect of Earth’s diurnal rotation on winds. Coriolis effect, two centuries before Coriolis." Christopher M. Graney, "Coriolis effect, two centuries before Coriolis", in Physics Today 64, 8, 8. [++] ALSO in this volume (vol 5) are significant papers by Agassiz, Dumas, Liebig, Cauchy, and a host of other interesting works by many others: AGASSIZ, Louis. "Sur les blocs erratiques du Jura.
