From the mind of a toxicologist who treats real mushroom poisonings alongside doctors and poison centers comes Poisonous Fungus Amongus—a playful, rhyming children’s book that explores the fascinating (and sometimes dangerous) world of mushrooms.

This beautifully illustrated book introduces young readers to poisonous mushrooms, edible mushrooms that can still make you sick, and dangerous look-alikes—all through engaging rhyme and clear, age-appropriate explanations. It’s an ideal STEM and nature education book for kids who love the outdoors, science, and discovery.

What’s inside:

A colorful introduction to mushroom anatomy and ecology
Simple explanations of caps, gills, pores, rings, bulbs (volvas), veils, spore prints, and more
Tips for safe mushroom foraging and why misidentification can be dangerous
Real-world lessons on how even “edible” mushrooms can cause illness if mishandled
Insight into fungi’s hidden roles in nature, from mycorrhizae to forest recycling

Real mushrooms, real science
Every mushroom shown in this book is a real species photographed by mycology experts, including renowned mushroom photographer Tavis Lynch. Every mushroom shows is genuinely poisonous (Unless its a Look-A-Like!)

With rhythm, rhyme, and scientific accuracy, Poisonous Fungus Amongus helps kids learn how to observe mushrooms safely, encouraging curiosity while reinforcing caution.

Perfect for:

Children of all ages, with something for every stage—little listeners and curious readers alike
Parents and families interested in nature and outdoor safety
Teachers and homeschool educators
Young mushroom enthusiasts and budding scientists
Fans of science books, nature books, and educational picture books

Poisonous Fungus Amongus is not a field guide—it’s a fun, educational adventure that teaches kids to respect mushrooms, ask questions, and stay safe while exploring the natural world.
