Illustrations feature a frontispiece illustation from Raoul Dufy, composer portraits, including ten photographic portraits by Robert Doisneau, as well composers letters and excerpts from musical scores. Composers mentioned include Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Bela Bartok, Alban Berg, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Pierre Boulez, Pierre Schaefer, Andre Jolivet, Henri Dutilleux, Karlheinz Stockhause, and Hans Werner Henze. Internally clean without marks or additions although faintly age toned at the extremities. Colour printed dustjacket is lightly shelf and edge worn with faint age toning at the extremities.
