A prize binding copy of Scotts’s Poetical Works. Beautiful gilt tooling on the front and back boards, and the spine including floral and vegetal motifs. Gilt page edges and green boards and green marbled endpapers. This book comprises the complete volume of works, including Scott’s introductions, notes, various readings and notes by J. G. Lockhart, Esq. This work contains illustrations and bookplates throughout. This is a beautiful binding, but there is damage on the front board from sunning - it spans across the top of the board and down the front board along the spine. Some damage on the corners of the leather binding, but very good condition inside. Evidence of the prize binding remains on the front endpaper: dating to 1903, belonging to the College of Preceptors. Awarded to Frances Mary Howl, pupil of Ladies College, Wellington.
