The poetry of Alexander Pope is presented in a mid-19th century American edition. Includes author's preface, plus Dr. Johnson's "Life of Pope." Dr. [William] Warburton has supplied endnotes. Pope's "Essay on Criticism," "Imitations of Horace," "An Essay on Man," "The Dunciad" and many additional writings are included. Mr. Pope (1688-1744) was an English poet, also admired for his translations of works by Homer into English. --- In half leather covers over marbled boards, marbled endpapers and all textblock edges marbled. With two steel engraved illustrations at front of book. --- An about-Good copy, with chafing and rubbing to leather, 3-inch tear to front joint, rubbing to paper covers and conspicuous dampstaining to corners of first few leaves. Two prior owners have signed names at endpapers. This item scarce in this edition. ; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; viii, (1), 10-504 pages.
