Both photography and poetry are powerful art forms to communicate emotions and ideas. Both art forms create feelings or mood, and as modes of expression, they could be used to reveal the rich heritage of Singapore's social history in a dramatic way. Some of the photographs documented in this book have been displayed in exhibitions all over the world and recently displayed at an exhibtiion jointly organised by the Singapore Heritage Society and the National Library Board, Singapore, held at the National Library from 15 March to 15 May 2006. This publication features a rare collection of Yip Cheong-Fun's photographs which have been individually published as photo-poetry with an anthology of poems contributed mainly by his son, Andrew Yip, an accomplished poet and photographer. ServiceWorld Centre is indeed proud to note that this publication also captures Singapore's changing landscape and the lifestyles of people through the eyes of award-winning photographer, Mr Yip Cheong-Fun. The photographer, Yip Cheong-Fun was a recipient of the covetous Cultural Medallion in 1984 and named by the prestigious Photographic Society of New York as an "Outstanding Photographers of the Century" in 1980. At a special exhibition Yip earned this distinction for his seascapes and four of his prints Tranquility; Rowing at Dawn; Early Morning; and The First Cas which were exhibited alongside nine other photographers frorr Hong Kong, America, Poland, China, Argentina and Hungary. Th< citation of the NYPS stated that the honour was "... the world': highest tribute to a photographer".
