About this Item
Preface by [Hallam] Tennyson. 174 x 107mm, fine dark green pebble-grained cloth, spine lettered in gilt, pp.[xx] 251, edges rough-trimmed. Inscribed by Hallam Tennyson on title-page: "Alfred Aubrey Tennyson / from / his loving father / May 2nd 1893". Lacks free endpapers, otherwise a very good copy, partly unopened. Contains poems (including 'Timbuctoo') 'omitted for some forgotten reason' from the rare privately printed first edition of 1827; the first anonymously published work by the future Poet Laureate. Four of the poems are by Frederick Tennyson. Alfred Aubrey Tennyson was the second son of Hallam Tennyson (son of the poet) and Audrey Boyle. The date of the inscription indicates that this was a gift for his second birthday, coinciding with the day of publication. Unique association copy. OFFERED TOGETHER WITH the 2nd [large-paper] edition, limited to 300 numbered copies on hand-made paper, Macmillan 1893. Preface by [Hallam] Tennyson. 255 x 168mm, fine light tan cloth, spine lettered & ruled in gilt, upper cover ruled in gilt, lower cover in blind, pp.[xx] 252 + 12pp MSS facsimiles, limitation leaf preceding half-title, fore- & tail edges untrimmed. Spine slightly darkened, trace of worming at tail corner of lower board and last few gatherings, untrimmed edges dust-soiled, otherwise internally fresh and unopened. No.124 of 300 copies printed April 1893. Near very good copy. The facsimile pages at the end of the volume (absent from the trade edition) comprise the draft of the original title-page, two letters, and the manuscript of 'Time: an Ode' and 'The Fall of Jerusalem', all in Alfred Tennyson's hand. The two items. Seller Inventory # 008206
