Synopsis:

A Poet. A Soldier. A Fierce Conscience in the Heart of War.

Siegfried Sassoon was many things—decorated war hero, literary prodigy, rebel, and reluctant legend. Dubbed “Mad Jack” by his fellow soldiers for his near-suicidal bravery, Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the trenches of World War I. But behind his battlefield heroism was a deeply sensitive, cultured soul who came to abhor the slaughter he witnessed.

In 1917, Sassoon publicly denounced the war—an act of moral courage that led to his confinement in a military asylum at Craiglockhart. It was there, under psychological strain and emotional isolation, that he penned some of his most haunting, visceral, and unforgettable poems.

This collection brings together his most powerful war verse—poems that expose the brutality, irony, and spiritual toll of modern combat. His writing is not only an indictment of war, but a deeply human expression of compassion, grief, and rage.

Why read this book?
✅ Witness the raw emotion and bitter truth behind romanticized warfare
✅ Explore the complex mind of a man who was both warrior and pacifist
✅ Discover the voice that shaped the conscience of a generation

Sassoon’s war poems are not just history—they are a cry for humanity that still echoes today.

About the Author: Siegfried Loraine Sassoon (1886–1967) was an English poet, author and soldier. Decorated for bravery on the Western Front, he became one of the leading poets of the First World War. His poetry both described the horrors of the trenches, and satirized the patriotic pretensions of those who, in Sassoon's view, were responsible for a pointless war. He later won acclaim for his prose work, notably his three-volume fictionalized autobiography, collectively known as the "Sherston Trilogy".
