About this title

Synopsis

"The Poems of Sappho" brings together the surviving fragments of one of the ancient world's most influential and revered lyric poets. Known for her profound explorations of love, longing, and the beauty of the natural world, Sappho's work represents a pivotal moment in the development of Western literature. This edition, featuring translations and insightful commentary by Edwin Marion Cox, bridges the gap between the ancient Greek originals and modern readers, offering a clear and evocative window into the poet's distinct voice.

In addition to the translated verses, this collection includes detailed historical and critical notes that delve into the biographical traditions surrounding Sappho and the linguistic nuances of her Aeolic dialect. By providing both the literary output and the scholarly context necessary to appreciate it, this volume serves as an essential resource for those interested in classical studies, ancient history, and the enduring power of the lyric form. The inclusion of a comprehensive bibliography further enhances its value for students and enthusiasts of Greek antiquity.
