Small square 8vo. viii, 112 pp. Unopened in original blue paper wrappers, printed to the upper cover. A remarkably well preserved copy. A pirated edition compiled by James Dykes Campbell, who later in life issued a highly regarded biography of Coleridge. Putting together a selection of early poems that Tennyson had chosen to suppress from authorised editions of his works, Campbell had this edition privately published in Toronto during a professional posting to Canada. It is thought that about 50 copies soon made it over to London and into the hands of the publisher John Camden Hotten, who set about marketing it. Tennyson quickly became aware of the edition and started litigation to prevent its sale, Hotten subsequently settling out of court - paying £100 in damages and surrendering his remaining stock of the book.
