FIRST EDITION, a little spotting, pp. 72, crown 8vo, original quarter natural linen, grey boards printed labels to upper board and backstrip (the former with a few faint spots, the latter browned), a little wear at corners, edges untrimmed and lightly spotted, free endpapers browned, the pastedowns lightly spotted, Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'To Mrs Bone, from the Author, (during whose stay at 59 Lynton Road South this book was accepted for publication, and the proofs of it corrected)'. A scarce book of poetry, her debut; Clarke, later a tutor at Cheltenham Ladies' College, had studied Classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, during which years she pursued mystical experiences - one of the poems here, 'Vision of Him', being included in 'The Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse' in 1917, quite an accolade for an undergraduate. Much of the verse is in that vein, including an elegy for Francis Thompson - though it sometimes stoops to more earthly matters, including the recent War in a few poems, and a sequence of four sonnets occasioned by the Peace Conference of 1919. Also seen with publisher's more customary dark blue boards. Seller Inventory # 82342
