What happens when a child faces hunger, homelessness, and uncertainty, yet still finds kindness, hope, and love?
Please Help, We Are Hungry is a heartfelt children's picture book that follows five-year-old Katlyn and her family as they navigate homelessness after difficult life circumstances force them from their home. Standing on a busy street corner with a simple sign asking for help, Katlyn discovers that even small acts of compassion can make a meaningful difference.
As caring neighbors, shelter workers, volunteers, and community members step forward to help, Katlyn learns an important lesson: every person deserves dignity, kindness, and the chance to feel seen. Through challenges and moments of hope, this touching story shows children that hard times are never a child's fault and that communities grow stronger when people help one another.
Perfect for ages 4-8, this beautifully written social-emotional learning book helps families and classrooms discuss:
Homelessness and housing insecurity in age-appropriate ways
Hunger and food insecurity
Empathy, compassion, and kindness
Community helpers and support systems
Resilience and hope during difficult times
Social-emotional learning and character education
Respect, dignity, and inclusion
This inspiring picture book includes discussion questions, guidance for parents and teachers, and a family kindness pledge to encourage meaningful conversations and positive action.
If you're looking for children's books about kindness, empathy, homelessness awareness, community helpers, social-emotional learning, or helping others, Please Help, We Are Hungry offers a powerful message of hope that young readers will remember long after the final page.
Because every child deserves food, safety, dignity, and hope.
