This edition, comprising both books, has been edited for American readership, but has retained throughout the "text, orthography and arrangement" of the originals. Anstey was a barrister of Lincoln's Inn who died in 1819. His "Guide", purporting to be the professional lectures of Mr. Surrebutter, was a great spoof of the legal profession, remaining popular throughout the 19th century.
