[title cont] Counsellor Bore'um, in an action betwixt John-a-Gull, and Counsellor John-a-Gudgeon, for assault and battery, by the late John Surrebutter, Esq., [pseud] Special Pleader, and Barrister at Law. [Books I & II]. American editon by James L. High, with notes. [end title] Book I first appeared in London in 1796 and Book II in 1802. This edition, comprising both books, has been edited for American readership, but has retained throughout the "text, orthography and arrangement" of the originals. Anstey was a barrister of Lincoln's Inn who died in 1819. His "Guide", purporting to be the professional lectures of Mr. Surrebutter, was a great spoof of the legal profession, remaining popular throughout the 19th century. Various eds cited in Marke, HLC, Marvin, & Cohen. Illustrated by 2 frontis illus. Binding is maroon cloth.
