Item description from seller

(Two Volume Set) The Platonist: An Exponent of Philosophic Truth, and Devoted Chiefly to the Dissemination of the Platonic Philosophy in All Its Phases, founded and edited by Thomas Moore Johnson and originally published from 1881–1888; reproduced in two volumes by the Theosophical Society of Edmonton, Canada, in 1988. An extraordinary record of the American Platonic and occult revival of the late nineteenth century, The Platonist was conceived by Johnson as a vehicle for recovering the mystical philosophy of Plato and the Neoplatonists at a time when classical philosophy was increasingly being separated from its spiritual and initiatory dimensions. Its pages range beyond Plato into Plotinus, Proclus and the Alexandrian tradition, Hermeticism, Kabbalah, Oriental philosophy, comparative religion, and the esoteric interpretation of ancient wisdom. Johnson himself occupied a fascinating position at the intersection of American Platonism and the nineteenth-century occult revival: an early member of the Theosophical Society and participant in the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, he understood Platonism as a living spiritual philosophy concerned with the immortality and purification of the soul and its ultimate approach toward the Divine. This two-volume facsimile preserves a remarkable and difficult-to-access periodical from the formative years of American Theosophy and Western esotericism. Two volumes. Hardcover. Near fine.
