Synopsis:

Plant Cytogenetics presents an up-to-date account of plant cytogenetic information that has been uncovered since the classic plant cytogenetics texts were published over two decades ago. Topics discussed include the handling of plant chromosomes, meiosis and its genetic control, a standard and universally accepted nomenclature for plant chromosomes, genome analysis and the chromosome pairing approach employed in biosystematic studies, the cytogenetic basis of somaclonal variation generated through cell and tissue cultures, and gene-chromosome-linkage group relationships. The book also presents a discussion of cytogenetic terminology. Plant Cytogenetics is an excellent text for agronomists, cytogeneticists, students, and researchers interested in plant cytogenetics.

Review:

Singh's book Plant Cytogenetics is a timely review of the advances in the field. ... the book includes an informative appendix about reagents, solutions and media, and a thorough glossary. Plant Cytogenetics is a remarkable book and a broad array of readers will find the entire book, or particular sections, of interest. The conceptual organization emphasizes basic themes in cytogenetics, combined with examples of information published in leading journals in the field. The text would provide students and other researchers an excellent basis for development of new hypothesis in chromosomal aberrations and the selection of plant cytogenetic techniques. ... Singh's work exemplifies the maturation of cytogenetics and the deep analysis of techniques involved in research. This book provides an excellent entry level introduction for those wishing to augment their understanding in the field. Any researcher in botany would do well to consult the relevant sections of Singh's book, both for his thoughtful treatments of many topics, and for the numerous case studies reported.
―Claudia Segovia-Salcedo, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, in Economic Botany, 2009, Vol. 63, No. 1

"Plant Cytogenetics" by Ram Singh gives an outstanding treatment of classical cytogenetics and then ably integrates molecular cytogenetic approaches. While commercial crops have been studied in the greatest detail cytogenetically, the species are treated not in specialized chapters but under cytogenetic principles. A mastery of the cytogenetic phenomena that has been reported for these crops, such as structural and numerical chromosome analyses (Chapter 7) and genome analysis with examples from Glycine, Gossypium, Brassica, Nicotiana and Triticum (Chapter 8) enable one to be completely familiar with the mechanisms of cytogenetics. Many Tables will be found especially useful, such as the list of primary trisomics derived from autotriploids, and the alien chromosome substitution list giving plant recipient, donor, procedure for transfer and genes transferred. ... There is an excellent Glossary of 25 pages and a list of References comprising 58 pages. An extensive Index serves both as a subject matter and a species index. The text is quite adequately illustrated with 114 figures. ..."Plant Cytogenetics" is a solid text embracing both classical and molecular aspects of cytogenetics. The Chapter on cytogenetic techniques will make the text a classic in its own right. In conclusion, I highly recommend the text for a thorough understanding of the basic mechanisms of plant cytogenetics for which the text is primarily designed.
―William F. Grant, Department of Plant Science, McGill University, Quebec, Canada

This is a solid text...I recommend the text for a thorough understanding of the basic mechanisms of plant cytogenetics for which the text is primarily designed. ... This is a comprehensive handbook that deals both with the theoretical and practical aspects related to plant cytogenetics and will be a valuable reference work for those entering the field for the first time, those who occasionally venture into the field, plant breeders, and those involved in active research.
―Glendon Ascough, School of Biological and Conservation Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, in South African Journal of Botany, 2007, Vol. 73, No. 3

Praise for the First Edition:

For advanced students who are looking for descriptions of the mechanics of the wide variety of chromosomal aberrations that have been studied in crop plants, this text should be of considerable use.
Plant Science Bulletin

... provides an excellent review of various techniques in handling of chromosomes, karyotype analysis, genetics of meiosis, genomic relationships, and chromosome manipulations. In addition to his own studies, Dr. Singh has made extensive use of the information published in various journals...The contents of the book are well arranged and easy to read and understand. It should serve as a useful textbook for students taking courses in genetics and cytogenetics and as a reference book for scientists engaged in plant cytogenetic research.
