Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive guide to library organization for small libraries. At the time of writing, training for librarians was relatively uncommon and the book was a vital resource for those who found themselves in charge of organizing and running a library without specialist knowledge. The book offers practical advice on collection development, management, and organization for libraries serving up to around 200 people - covering aspects such as record keeping, cataloging, book repair, and the promotion of a reading culture in the local community. These methodologies laid a foundation for modern library science and while the book includes historical references to offer context, it remains useful to librarians with little training or experience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

It is recommended that all orders for books be made out on book order cards which will be kept and form the shelf list. In libraries too small to be classified the books will be recorded by accession number and shelved alphabetically by author. All methods of work from the selection of the book until it is ready for circulation and eventually with drawn are described in detail and lists of supplies needed are given with prices. There are suggestions and lists of aids for equipment, for care of books, for library economics, for publicity and allied activities. A brief history of the library movement in America leads to the relations between the librarian and the board, the schools, the teachers and the community; and to suggestions given for making the library an attractive center in the town life.
