16 x 25cm. 78 pages, with 88 illustrations. Original hardcover with gilt lettering. Mild signs of wear to boards and spine, outer margins of pastedowns and endpapers slightly waterstained. Otherwise in very good condition. Very Rare ! A report prepared for the British Admiralty and published in 1917 by the Government Stationery Office. Contents include: Chapter One - The elementary theory of the inter-action of two highly polished surfaces in contact under pressure. Chapter Two - Materials: The chemical composition, physical properties, and occurrence of the principal substances examined to determine the degree of suitability for pivots and caps. Chapter Three - Typical examples of compass pivots and caps under various conditions of service and tests. Chapter Four - The correct shape of pivots and caps.
