Yet throughout his career Lynden Pindling was a deeply controversial figure, as reviled by his political opponents as he was idolized by his supporters. He retained his place at the helm despite periodic crises in the economy, accusations of mismanagement, corruption and profiting from drug-running, the animosity of the United States Government, and unfriendly reportage in the world's media. Perhaps worst of all, Pindling suffered successive defections by disgruntled associates and would-be successors.
None claimed to want a balanced and fair assessment more than Sir Lynden himself. He chose a biographer on the express understanding that all would be laid open and that no constraints would be placed on what was written. Even more important than making available all his official papers, Sir Lynden in the last two years of his life gave an unique series of candid and revealing interviews - amounting to 26 hours of tape. This priceless record, however, was checked and qualified by a scrupulous trawling of material in the Public Records Office in London and the Bahamian National Archives, the whole run of local newspapers and international "insiders'" reports, and all relevant books. Equally revealing, and even more fascinating, were the 30 hours of taped interviews with Sir Lynden's important contemporaries - former foes and the politically neutral, as well as faithful associates and dependents.
The resulting work is more than a political portrait. It is a resolute attempt to separate the politician from the statesman, and both from the man himself; to situate his life and doings in the contexts of place and times; and to weigh his own account against the actual record and the words of others.
