Neuware - 'Pilgrims of '48' offers a compelling account of a pivotal moment in European and American history. The narrative follows the life and experiences of a participant in the Austrian Revolution of 1848, exploring the idealistic fervors and political upheavals that swept across the Habsburg Empire. As the democratic aspirations of the revolution faced suppression, the work transitions into an intimate portrayal of the subsequent migration to the United States. It documents the journey of the 'Forty-Eighters'-the liberal refugees who fled political persecution in Europe to seek freedom and opportunity in America.

Written by Josephine Goldmark, this study combines personal family history with broader historical analysis. It highlights the intellectual and cultural contributions of German-speaking immigrants to their new homeland, particularly in the fields of social reform and intellectual development. Through letters, diaries, and historical records, the book reconstructs the social landscape of mid-19th-century Vienna and the challenges of the transatlantic voyage. "Pilgrims of '48" serves as both a detailed historical record and a tribute to the enduring quest for democratic ideals and the immigrant experience that shaped the American identity.
