Item description from seller

A very scarce collection of twenty plates, depicting Edwardian Bath, from photographs by the Golden Age photographer Martin J. Ridley. A very scarce work in the publisher's original paper wraps. Front of the wrap detached. Lacking the rear of the wrap.A complete collection of twenty tipped-in monochrome plates, from glass plate negatives, of Martin Ridley's photographs of early Edwardian Bath. This volume includes photographs of the newly built Empire Hotel, trams travelling through the high street, Edwardian shoppers in Milsom Street, and the Roman Baths, which were under restoration at that time. Martin John Ridley (1861-1936) was a popular photographer during the Golden Age of photography. The picture postcards featuring his photographs of South West of England, identifiable by the initials "MJR", are often sought-after. Many of his original glass-plate negatives, mostly held by the National Library of Wales, are now being academically catalogued.Undated; dated from the photograph of the Empire Hotel, which was built between 1899 and 1901. Ridley was also known to be living on Haviland Road in Boscombe between 1897 and 1903, which is given as the publisher's address for this work. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Lacking the rear of the wrap. Front of the wrap is marked and chipped, with losses to the spine and lower extremities. Two pieces of tape adhere the wrap to the textblock, as the front of the wrap has become detached. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd spot. Plates are in excellent condition. Small closed tear to the first two pages, not affecting the plates. Good Only.
