Print on Demand. This book explores the foundational concepts of financial arithmetic, the practical application of arithmetic to monetary systems. It builds a conceptual framework beginning with the most rudimentary financial concepts, and guides the reader through increasingly complex problems, equipping them to solve a wide range of financial problems. The author begins by establishing a standard of value, and using this, defines the units of account, their relationship to one another, and how to convert between them. They then apply this knowledge to real-world examples, such as calculating price and value, profit and loss, and the cost of borrowing money. The book also covers more advanced topics such as calculating the present value and the equivalent time of a series of payments. This book is not merely a collection of formulae and algorithms; the author takes a conceptual approach that explains the reasoning behind each step, facilitating a deeper understanding of financial principles. Through its clear explanations, systematic approach, and wide range of examples, this book provides a solid foundation in financial arithmetic, empowering readers to make informed financial decisions in a variety of contexts. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The progress of physical science has caused the idea of the unit to become more prominent in text-books on arithmetic and the old form of rule of three has been replaced to a large extent by what is called the unitary method, or the method of reduction to the unit. That method, in my opinion, very imperfectly represents the reasoning process involved.
