Add to basketThe various habitats of species of the moth subfamily Phycitinae of Sumatra, presented in detail in previous publications (Roesler & Küppers 1973, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983), are at serious risk and sometimes even already determined as destroyed. A total of 187 Phycitinae species are known from Sumatra, spread over 86 genera. The majority of Phycitinae species of Sumatra chorologically belong to the tropical Orientalis elements. Also present are types of Oriental-Australian, Palearctic-Indoaustralian, Ethiopian-Indoaustralian and cosmopolitan distribution forms. As for the Sphingidae (Roesler & Küppers 1977) the Sunda shelf is the probable evolution center for the Phycitinae, with a spreading out of its elements to the north and northwest. Ecologically speaking, the cultural landscape species concentrate at low-lying levels, the species of semi-open terrain at the foothills, and the typical forest species were mostly encountered in the mountains. The percentage of detected pests among the 187 identified Sumatran Phycitinae species is low (5 to 7%) and also does not change within the individual elevations. The proportion of Phycitinae species detected as potentially harmful steadily increases from the planes (about 2.5%) up into the mountains, eventually reaching more than 50%. The possible consequences of impact will only be able to be gauged in the future.
