About this Item
Two photo albums. String-tied oblong folios. Measuring 14" x 11". Both albums black cloth over stiff paper board with seal of the University of Virginia (UVA) stamped in gold on the front board. Contains 360 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin in photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 7" x 9", some with captions. Very good album with some edgewear with near fine contents. An extensive collection of photographs and scrap material compiled by Henry H. Cummings while attending the UVA in the late 1920s He documents his track and field career (he was twice named caption), a European trip with friends, time in and around the UVA campus, and other sports on campus. Throughout the albums Cummings includes newspaper clippings of sporting events he was involved in as well as fellow UVA students and friends. Cummings qualified for the 1928 Olympics held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and competed in the 200-meter sprint, finishing 4th in the semifinals. The second album begins with official large format images from the Olympics with action shots of runners and a group photograph of four American athletes in uniforms. Cummings and fellow athletes are seen touring Europe before and after the games. Additionally included are 170 postcards and souvenir photographs from his time in Europe. After UVA Cummings went on to teach at Woodberry Forest Academy before returning to UVA for graduate school. He eventually taught political science and continued to participate in track events. When World War II broke out Cummings joined the Army as a major with the military intelligence section. He served in Morocco and Italy eventually promoted to colonel. Sadly, in 1945 he contracted polio and died in a military hospital in Italy shortly before the end of the war. An extensive collection documenting an Olympic runner's time at school and competitions, including the 1928 Summer Olympics. Seller Inventory # 454329
