Contains 87 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 4" x 4" and 9½" x 13" with some captions. Album pages detached and chips thus good only with very good or better photographs with some edgewear. A collection of images taken in Santa Barbara in 1896 by Edwin A. Leach and his wife Elvira Elizabeth Biddle captioned here as "Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Leach". Edwin was born in Iowa, the son of a prominent early photographer there, John Leach and he took the skills he learned from his father to the west coast. The photographs are well-composed and show sites around Santa Barbara including missions, landscapes, and tourist destinations. Of note are numerous large prints which feature the Old Mission of Santa Barbara featuring Franciscan Friars posed on the grounds, a photo of Buffalo Bill atop a horse, a local forest ranger, as well as landscape and coastal scenes, among others. Views from the beaches show tourists in bathing suits enjoying the water, a family collecting shells, waves crashing against a pier, and sailboats in the sea. The Leach’s had an eye for photography and the images are beautiful scenes of Santa Barbara as well as portrait photography of friends, family, and well-to-do Californians such as Mrs. Burton, Miss Tallant Tubo, Gilbert White, and Lady Paget. Fashionable women of Santa Barbara are featured throughout the album, some of which include hand-coloring, many captioned simply "native daughter." The couple were interested in art as well and they include photo reproductions of art, portraits of local artists, and a prominent art dealer. A wonderful collection of photography documenting Victoria-era Santa Barbara.…
