Black string tied photo album binding, 11 x 7", containing 268 black and white photographs, 14 laid in loose, the rest cornered or pasted in, plus five souvenir postcards. Most are uncaptioned save for eight of the loose photos, and some of the cornered-in photos; of the latter, a few appear to be captioned on the backs. Inscribed to front pastedown "To Florence Skevington, From the Junior and Senior Guilds of Van Nuys, Calif." A photo album compiled by Florence Skevington, a young Los Angeles woman who traveled to West China to serve as a missionary in 1924. The first 56 photographs documents the journey across the Pacific undertaken in October, 1924, by Florence, together with her sister Gladys, with stops in Hawaii and Japan. These include group images of the Skevingtons and their party, as well as an image of surfers on Waikiki Beach. This is followed by 30 or so images depicting Shanghai--the harbor (including junks and local vendors in rowboats), street scenes, Chinese laborers, rickshaw travel, and the Bund. The next 60-70 photos depict the long river journey by Florence and Gladys to their final destination of Chengdu, in Sichuan Province. According to one account, "Four times Miss Skevington made the 2000 mile journey on the Yangtze and Min Rivers between Shanghai and Chengtu" (The Berkshire Eagle, 3/5/1932). Included are many river views, plus images of river towns, street scenes, boats, Florence's bunk, nomads hanging wool, and local landmarks including the Memorial Gates in Luchou, Sichuan Province, Ichang Pagoda in Hubei Province, and Tiger Tooth Gorge along the Yangtze River. Finally, the remaining 98 or so photos document Florence and Gladys's time in Chengdu. There, the two "lived together in a 13-room house for which they had to have all of the furniture made. It was their effort to maintain their home in every way as they would have in this country so that it would offer an example to the Chinese of the highest type of American hospitality. They always kept open house and the young people especially welcomed the opportunity to visit them." (New Rochelle Standard Star, 6/20/1931). The images in the album certainly reflect this spirit. The house is shown, including several interior shots depicting a Christmas tree, and the Skevingtons sitting in their parlor. Another focus is on children, as "Florence's work was mainly with children", and she established a kindergarten "for which she designed and had made every article of equipment" (The Standard Star); thus, there images of children playing badminton, attending school, etc. Other images depict the missionaries (i.e. posing with natives and being carried on a sedan chair), the interior of a church, local architecture, local residents (i.e. "our cooks baby"), and more. An unusual Chinese missionary album due to its focus on West China and the long journey to get there. Hint of soiling to a few images, slight musty odor, a couple images missing, one image torn, else very good.
