Henri-Louis Bergson (1859?1941) was a French philosopher who was influential in the tradition of analytic philosophy and continental philosophy, especially during the first half of the 20th century until the Second World War, but also after 1966 when Gilles Deleuze published Le Bergsonisme. Bergson is known for his arguments that processes of immediate experience and intuition are more significant than abstract rationalism and science for understanding reality. Bergson lived the quiet life of a French professor, marked by the publication of his four principal works: in 1889, Time and Free Will (Essai sur les données immédiates de la conscience) in 1896, Matter and Memory (Matière et mémoire) in 1907, Creative Evolution (L'Évolution créatrice) in 1932, The Two Sources of Morality and Religion (Les deux sources de la morale et de la religion) In 1900 the Collège de France selected Bergson to a Chair of Greek and Roman Philosophy, which he held until 1904. He then replaced Gabriel Tarde in the Chair of Modern Philosophy, which he held until 1920. He was awarded the 1927 Nobel Prize in Literature, In 1930 France awarded him its highest honour, the Grand-Croix de la Legion d'honneur. To honor the 100 year anniversary of his birth, Philosophical Library published an addition to it's Wisdom Library of an earlier Bergson work; Philosophy of Poetry: The Genius of Lucretius. Bergson displayed his ability in the humanities by the publication of this edition of extracts from Lucretius (Titus Lucretius Carus, c. 98-55 B.C.), with a critical study of De Rerum Natura, issued as Extraits de Lucrèce, and of the materialist cosmology of that poet (1884). Repeated editions of this work attest to its importance in promoting Classics among French youth. This centennial publication was edited, translated, and in part recast by Wade Baskin. Wade Baskin (1924?1974) was an American author and translator. Known for his extensive list of books on the occult and for his studies of linguistics and philosophy, Baskin also taught at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he was inducted into the Faculty Hall of Fame. Paperback has been carefully read and preserved. Cover is complete with only a storage crease at foot across from spine. Single reading crease in spine. Interior is tight and clean. Only a single sentence in preface was found underlined in pencil. No ownership or other markings found. Copyright 1959. Based on and reprint of the work De Rerum Natura, published in 1884.
