Add to basketPhilosophy of the Ancients (1991) ? Friedo Ricken (University of Notre Dame Press, ISBN: 0268015880, Condition: Good ? reluctantly unleashed by ?Crappy Old Books?) Ah, the ancients. Those toga-clad overachievers who spent their time inventing democracy, geometry, and the concept of arguing about everything forever. Friedo Ricken?s Philosophy of the Ancients (1991) is the respectable crash course in all of it ? from the cryptic wisdom of Heraclitus to Aristotle?s relentless system-building, with Plato floating somewhere in between insisting he?s right about everything. This is no glossy ?philosophy for dummies.? No cartoons of Socrates holding a latte. Ricken delivers the serious goods: crisp overviews, clean exposition, and just enough detail to remind you why ancient philosophy degrees exist. It?s the kind of book that makes you nod gravely, mutter ?ah yes, teleology,? and then quietly check the glossary. Condition: Good . In Crappy Old Books dialect, that means ?not pristine, but still capable of conveying eternal truths.? The spine may have been cracked in the pursuit of wisdom, the pages may bear a whiff of academic despair, but everything remains readable, sturdy, and reassuringly earnest. It looks like what it is: a book that has survived seminars, coffee spills, and possibly one or two late-night crises of meaning. So if you?d like to spend your evenings arguing with shadows in a cave, pondering the Stoics? stiff-upper-lip approach to life, or marvelling at how Epicurus basically invented the weekend, this is your ticket. Crappy Old Books proudly (well, with a faint sigh) offers you this doorway to 2,500 years of thought ? slightly worn, thoroughly Good, and infinitely better than scrolling through social media for philosophy quotes.
