Set of four volumes. large 8vos. Pagination: vol I -- cxxix, 347 pp; vol II -- vii, 560 pp; vol III -- vi, 579 pp; vol IV -- ix, 603 pp. Illustration: vol I includes a b/w frontispiece portrait of Hume (Allan Ramsey pinx/Robert Grave sculp) and a b/w engraved plate entitled "Hume's Monument, Carlton Hill." Colophon of each volume states "Printed by J. Hutchison, for the heirs of D. Willison." Content: Vol I. Treatise of human nature. Vol II. Treatise of human nature. Vol III. Essays, moral, political and literary. Vol IV. An inquiry concerning the principles of morals. Appendix. The natural history of religion. Additional essays. Physical Description and Condition: Uniform binding. 22 x 14.5 cm. Five raised ribs, six compartments. Gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Compartment 3 (containing the volume number) dyed black. Gilt double border on the upper and lower boards. All edges marbled. Gilt dentelle along and inside the edges. Marbled endpapers (Note: vol I is missing the front pastedown). Armorial bookplates belonging to Sir Edward Strachey (1812-1901), third Baronet of Sutton Court in the County of Somerset pasted onto the front pastedowns (missing from vol I). All volumes slightly foxed throughout. Very occasional marginalia in graphite. Pages generally bright and clean. Bindings are strong and square though vol I's upper board detached at some point and was repaired with cloth tape (likely also when the front pastedown was lost). The boards and spines of all volumes and slightly worn, bumped, and rubbed with some minor cracking/chipping in the hinges, crowns, and tails. Of note: vol I is more worn than its brothers and has some water stains along the foot and fore edge; vol IV has three shallow gouges in the leather on the lower board. Provenance Note: Sir Edward Strachey inherited the title of Baronet from his unmarried uncle in 1858. The armorial bookplates proclaim him as a Baronet, and it does not appear that they replaced an existing bookplate (though that is still a possibility), therefore it is likely that this set came into Sir Strachey's possession sometime during 1858 or after. A charming set of Hume's work. Hardcover: full tan calf over boards.…
