- Original 1911 Edition Text — Faithfully presented from Alexander Teixeira de Mattos's celebrated translation of Leroux's 1910 French original
- Thoughtfully Designed Interior — Clean, readable typography with generous margins for annotation and reflection
- Editorial Afterword — An original literary essay exploring Leroux's phantom, the real Paris Opera house that inspired him, and the strange tenderness at the heart of his gothic mystery
- Giftable Keepsake Edition — A beautiful addition to any classics collection, and a haunting gift for lovers of gothic fiction.
Beneath the Paris Opera House — above its cellars, its stables, its underground lake — a ghost moves through walls. The dancers whisper of a death's head in a dress coat; the managers receive letters demanding a salary and a private box; and a soprano named Christine Daaé begins singing with a voice no teacher on earth could have given her. She says an Angel of Music visits her dressing room. She has never seen his face.
When Christine triumphs on stage and vanishes from it, her childhood friend Raoul de Chagny follows her into a mystery that descends, floor by floor, beneath the opera house — into trapdoors, mirrors, torture chambers, and the house on the lake where the ghost keeps his organ, his coffin, and his terrible hope. For the phantom is no spirit. He is a man named Erik, a genius born with a face that exiled him from the human race, who has decided that Christine will love him — living bride or none at all.
Leroux tells his tale as an investigation, assembling testimony, documents, and confessions until the impossible becomes undeniable. What begins as a ghost story becomes something stranger and sadder: a portrait of monstrous loneliness, of music as both seduction and salvation, and of the one act of mercy that finally unmasks the man behind the phantom.
Some faces are hidden by masks. Others are hidden by the stories we tell about them.
Descend beneath the Opera. The ghost is waiting.
