Item description from seller

Fair. An incomplete but still lovely antiquarian bound volume of Peterson's Magazine (1875), Volume LXVII (January-June), published in Philadelphia by Charles J. Peterson, w/ numerous original nineteenth-century engravings, colored decorative plates, and additional loose and laid-in period material. A truly special survivor: custom bound for its original owner and personalized w/ her name, Mollie A. Compton, lettered in gold on the spine. Handsome half-leather binding, black leather spine and corners over cloth boards, the spine decorated in gold w/ the volume date. Ex libris: Emeline Fairbanks Memorial Library bookplate to front pastedown. A well-loved book that wears its 150 years honestly: rubbing, scuffing and some leather loss to spine ends, joints and corners. Hinges loose; some pages and gatherings partially detached. Pages age-toned w/ foxing, soiling and edge chips and tears; some plates folded, creased or torn. Some pages and illustrations missing; not collated; included as found. Please handle gently. Ships in a box, quickly & w/care. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ SYNOPSIS & HISTORY: Full of Victorian charm, the 1875 volume is a lovely window into the Victorian woman's world of fashion, needlework and home. Hand-colored fashion plates, black-and-white dress engravings, colored needlework and lace patterns and full-page engravings, along w/ fiction, poetry, music and household instruction. Many plates still crisp and bright. Sheets from later 1875 issues and April 1876 included. Fashion illustrations include Les Modes Parisiennes (August 1875), a large folding hand-colored plate of three women in elaborate gowns in soft blues, pinks and cream; The Evening Party, a hand-colored plate of women in formal evening dress; black-and-white engravings of a Walking Dress and a Carriage Dress, each w/ a new hat and a new style for dressing the hair, w/ the bustle silhouette and trimmings of the day; and Children's Fashions for January, three children in tailored winter coats, hats and accessories. Needlework patterns include a black-and-yellow needlework chart, a blue-and-brown work basket design, a red-and-white applique valance for a bracket, and Patterns in Greek Lace, a lovely design of birds, flowers and scrolling borders on a solid black ground. The Centennial Slipper, In Oriental Applique and Embroidery (December 1875), in yellow, red, blue and green, dates from the eve of America's 1876 Centennial. Full-page engravings include New Year's Eve, The Queen of the May, Grandfather's Watch, In a Pout, A Modern Water Nymph, The Forest Spring and a sleeping child w/ a kitten. Founded in 1842 as a lower-priced rival to Godey's Lady's Book, Peterson's became one of the most popular American women's magazines of the nineteenth century, w/ a circulation of about 150,000 by the 1870s. Known for its fashion engravings, sewing patterns, decorative needlework, household instruction and fiction. The contents list two early stories by Fannie Hodgson Burnett, later Frances Hodgson Burnett of The Secret Garden fame: After Thirty Years and As Good as a Mile.…
