Print on Demand. This book defines the method to calculate the scattering of electrons from hydrogen atoms with a high degree of precision. In the scattering process, it applies perturbation theory to the full Schrà dinger equation, where the electron-electron interaction alone acts as the perturbation. The results are compared with the original first-order perturbation calculations for this problem. The book differs from previous studies by analyzing the exchange scattering amplitude to high energies of the incoming electron, where it demonstrates that the energy dependence calculated via the perturbation method is different from that obtained using the conventional first-order perturbation method. The author explores the implications of these results and offers reasons for preferring the method used in this book. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

If the mass of the proton is taken to be infinite, one can, as an alterna -tive, take as the perturbation simply the interaction between the two electrons. (this we call the symmetric In this case the unperturbed hamiltonian is separable and the initial and final state wave functions corres ponding to it can be exhibited in closed form.
This latter procedure is likely to lead to more accurate results than the former, since we include more of the interaction in our unperturbed problem.
This advantage will be most pronounced in the calculation of exchange scattering.
