DICKENS, Charles. WHIPPLE, Edwin Percy, introduction. The Personal History of David Copperfield. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company; The Riverside Press, Cambridge, [c. 1880]. ILLUSTRATED LIBRARY EDITION. Houghton, Mifflin issue of the Riverside edition published by Hurd and Houghton in 1876–77. Two volumes, complete. Octavo (8vo). Contemporary brown calf over marbled boards, spines gilt-decorated in compartments with red and green morocco labels; marbled endpapers and marbled edges. Illustrated with steel-engraved plates, including illustrations after Hablot Knight Browne (“Phiz”). With introductions by Edwin Percy Whipple. Its memorable cast includes Betsey Trotwood, Mr. Micawber, Uriah Heep, Steerforth, and Agnes Wickfield. Dickens later described David Copperfield as a favorite among his own works, and its strong autobiographical elements have made it central to the study of his life and fiction. Contents generally clean and well preserved, with light, even toning and occasional light staining, including to the title pages. All plates present. Ownership bookplates of Col. John H. Stark to the front pastedowns. Bindings remain sound and firm.
