Abschließend werden Risiken in den Blick genommen, die durch typische Mängel verursacht werden können.Das Werk gründet neben der jahrelangen Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeit sowie Gutachter- und Instandsetzungspraxis des Autors auf einer Reihe nationaler und internationaler Literatur, weshalb jedes Kapitel mit einer ausführlichen Liste der berücksichtigten Veröffentlichungen endet.Gegenüber der 1. Auflage in zwei Bänden wurde der Stoff für mehr Übersichtlichkeit in einem Buch zusammengefasst. Wo sinnvoll und notwendig, wurden Kapitel umgeschichtet, erweitert und umformuliert, so dass ihre Anzahl von 28 auf 20 reduziert werden konnte.Baugruben und Fundamente bilden jetzt ein gemeinsames Kapitel, während die Anforderungen an Außenwände und Dächer einheitlich betrachtet werden und in acht Kapiteln über die Gebäudehülle, davon fünf über Außenwände und drei über Dachkonstruktionen, zur Auswahl stehen. This third book in a series of three dealing with building physics and its application, looks to the impact a performance requirements linked approach has on building design and construction. It starts with a resumption of what’s expected from buildings, followed by discussing a range of materials needed to guarantee a correct heat, air, moisture response. Then, looked is to preparing the building site, the excavations needed, the foundations, the below-grade parts and spaces, the structural systems commonly used, the floors, different types of outer walls, different types of roof assemblies, inside walls, the glazing, windows, outer doors, glass façades, bal-conies, all kind of shafts, chimneys, stairs, timber-frame construction, wall, floor and ceiling finishes. Each time again, not only the heat, air, moisture related metrics but also structural integrity, durability, fire safety, acoustics, maintenance, sustainability and buildability are dis- cussed. The whole ends with looking to the risks deficiencies may cause.
For this new edition, all chapters have been critically reviewed, actualized and gifted with additional figures where needed, so incorporating the experiences gained from 38 years of teaching to architectural and building engineering students, from 36 years of research, and from 53 years of practice, curing damage cases due to failing performance.

About the Author
Dr. Ir. Hugo S.L.C. Hens is an emeritus professor of the University of Leuven (KULeuven), Belgium. Until 1972, he worked as a structural engineer and site supervisor at a mid-sized architectural office. He taught building physics from 1975 to 2003, performance-based building design from 1975 to 2005 and building services from 1975 to 1977 and 1990 to 2008. He authored and co-authored 68 peer reviewed journal papers and 174 conference papers about the research done, has helped to manage hundreds of building damage cases and acted as co-ordinator of the CIB W40 working group on Heat and Mass Transfer in Buildings from 1983 to 1993. Between 1986 and 2008, he was operating agent of the Annexes 14, 24, 32 and 41 of the IEA EXCO on Energy in Buildings and Communities. He is a fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Dr. Ir. Hugo S.L.C. Hens ist emeritierter Professor der Universität Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgien. Bis 1972 arbeitete er als Tragwerkplaner und Bauleiter in einem mittelgroßen Architekturbüro. Nach dem plötzlichen Tod seines Vorgängers und Förderers Professor A. de Grave und nach der Verteidigung seiner Doktorarbeit baute er ab 1975 schrittweise das Fachgebiet Bauphysik am Fachbereich Bauingenieurwesen auf. Er lehrte Bauphysik von 1975 bis 2003, Performance Based Building Design von 1975 bis 2005 und Gebäudetechnik von 1975 bis 1977 und von 1990 bis 2008. Hugo Hens war Autor und Mitautor von 68 begutachteten Zeitschriftenaufsätzen und 174 Konferenzbeiträgen über seine Forschungsarbeiten, und erstellte Hunderte von Schadensgutachten und Sanierungsplanungen. Von 1983 bis 1993 wirkte er als Koordinator der CIB W40 Working group für "Heat and Mass Transfer in Buildings". Zwischen 1986 und 2008 war er Beauftragter für die Anhänge 14, 24, 32 und 41 der IEA EXCO on Energy in Buildings and Communities. Er ist Mitglied der American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Rheinberg-Buch Andreas Meier eK, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, +49 02204-9671181, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
