The book tells the story of Perdita Robinson, an 18th-century actress who was known for her beauty and charm. Through the use of letters, journals, and other historical documents, Makower creates a vivid portrait of Perdita's life, from her humble beginnings as the daughter of a London hairdresser to her rise to fame as a celebrated actress and mistress of the Prince of Wales. The novel explores themes of love, ambition, and betrayal, as Perdita navigates the treacherous waters of London society and struggles to maintain her independence and dignity in the face of scandal and gossip. Along the way, she encounters a cast of colorful characters, including the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, the artist Joshua Reynolds, and the notorious courtesan Harriette Wilson.Written in a lyrical and evocative style, Perdita: A Romance in Biography is a captivating tale of a remarkable woman who defied the conventions of her time and carved out a place for herself in history. Makower's novel is a timeless classic that continues to enchant readers with its richly drawn characters, vivid descriptions of 18th-century London, and powerful themes of love, loyalty, and self-discovery.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
