An attractive example of Francois La Rochefoucauld's Maxims and Morals, with critical notes from the Abbe de La Roche. In the original French. A 'new edition' of François de La Rochefoucauld is a collection of concise observations on human character and social behaviour, first published a century prior. The maxims repeatedly examine self-interest, vanity, pride, love, friendship, jealousy and the motives concealed beneath apparently virtuous actions, often arguing that conduct presented as generous or honourable is influenced by self-regard. Here accompanied by an extensive observations by the Abbé de La Roche, who comments on and interprets each reflection with moral, critical, and historical notes. In a full calf binding, with gilt detailing to back strip. Rubbing to joints, with front joint head starting, and board firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good.
