1 In general, a hollow in which surface water collects and escapes through a shaft, i.e. a SWALLOW HOLE. 2 Specifically, a feature characteristic of limestone country (KARST), a closed depression which is dry or through which water seeps downwards, resembling in shape a basin, funnel or cylinder. 3 A large depression in a SHIELD VOLCANO or lava dome formed when the surface has cooled and solidified but subsides as the under-lying molten lava flows away.
