Vintage Penguin First Edition. #D96. The Penguin Book of Welsh Verse, translated and introduced by Anthony Conran, offers a wide-ranging survey of Welsh poetry from the early medieval period to the twentieth century, presenting the tradition’s continuity and its remarkable formal and emotional variety. Conran includes praise poems, elegies, nature lyrics, love poems and sharply political verse, giving English-language readers access to forms such as cynghanedd and the strict metres that shape much of the classical tradition. His introduction sets out the historical and cultural background, showing how poets served princes, how monastic learning influenced early verse, and how later writers responded to loss, identity and social change. It’s a vivid, carefully curated anthology that opens a rich, resilient literature rooted in landscape, language and memory.
