Large folio (63.5 x 52cm.) 306 lithographed designs of decorative French mantel clocks. Nineteenth-century navy cloth with green paper corners, lettered in gilt on red leather label to upper cover, "Pendules Composition no.1". 306 lithographs of various sizes over 137 sheets, some with multiple plates pasted to each sheet, some full page and some folding, a few printed in sepia. Including: 142 plates approx. 15 x 23cm. 55 plates approx. 20 x 29cm. 18 plates approx. 29 x 43cm. 83 plates approx. 43 x 50cm. 8 plates approx. 50 x 65cm. The majority within printed borders, with printed titles, dimensions, and a publication line, each with gilt bordered white labels annotated in manuscript with the prices of the design in various materials and finishes. Binding a little worn, some plates detached, one browned, a few with small stains or tears. Generally very good. This album includes designs by Sorner, Leclère and Lelievre (printed by Lemercier, Ducreux, Lanoue, Plista and others) and show decorative clock surrounds with allegorical, mythical, historical and contemporary figures, from Plutarch, to Benjamin Franklin, to Lord Byron, together with rural and religious scenes. Most of the plates have labels describing the prices of the different materials for the clock surround, so it is probable that this album was used by a clockmaker for his clients to choose the surround of their choice.…
